Well just as we were beginning to wonder if that was it for winter, the temperatures dropped. Of course, that meant everything was coated in a nice, thick crust of ice. While it’s a bit of a pain to get around (we’re seriously considering whether it’s worth trying out the skates in the yard) it’s good to have it properly cold. And the ice is good for the plants. It should protect them should we have another big variation in weather.
This morning it’s snowing. It’s gorgeous and wintery out – a great day to be getting inside sorted and organized (which I’m doing while J and LG are at their Cubs’ Winter Camp) but man it is treacherous! The ice with snow is a deadly combo. I’m planning to litter the yard with some coarse flax straw we bought this year. It’s too dense to be great animal bedding – although when mixed with hay/straw it’s not so bad but it is great for traction. And if some flax comes up next year, so much the better.
